Specification Review

SAE J1401 brake hose documents to request

Distinguish requested hydraulic-hose specifications from verified supplier declarations. The SAE overview of J1401 is a public heading, not a certificate that a quoted assembly complies. We do not hold the paid full text of the standard.

Specification Review decision points

Requested parameters
State working medium (nonpetroleum hydraulic fluid unless another medium is declared), overall length with measurement points, end-fitting thread and seat, fitting angle, bracket position, model year and mounting position. Units must appear on the request.
Supplier response
Ask the factory to identify assembly number, revision, claimed SAE edition, deviations and whether the offer is new or remanufactured. A family catalog line is not an assembly identity.
Evidence scope
Match drawings and pressure or impulse reports to the quoted assembly and legal entity. Manufacturer marks on the hose cover should be compared with the quote, not assumed from a stock photo.
Unresolved points
Record missing edition, missing report identifiers, unmatched length conventions or incomplete BOM before approving a sample or production lot. Sample acceptance is not batch qualification.

What a standard name cannot do

Writing “SAE J1401” in an RFQ does not create conformity. Request the edition year, the tested assembly, the laboratory or supplier report identifier and any stated limitations. Air-brake claims belong on a different comparison line. We will not invent a pass/fail result for a hose we have not received.

Electrical interface and connector pin count are irrelevant to this hydraulic hose review. Bore diameter of the fitting seat, thread pitch, overall length and left/right orientation are the geometry checks that belong here.
